An engagement party is usually a casual get together thrown by the bride and groom to-be to literally announce their engagement. It can be thrown by the parents of either the bride or groom, or both  if they know ahead of time. Here are some ideas to get you started.

When should the party be?

Typically a couple needs a full year to plan a wedding and their close friends and family will help along the way. Gather your guests anywhere from a six months to a year before the actual event to formally announce your decision to get married.

Invitations

These can be as formal as a written note that is mailed out to those you wish to invite or a casual phone call. With the growing popularity of the Internet you could also send out virtual invitations or create an event invitation on Facebook. Make sure to invite the guests from the engagement party to the actual wedding as well.

Where should I have it?

Remember that this party is only for those closest to you to tell them of your upcoming wedding. It can be held at a fancy restaurant or private function venue or for a more casual atmosphere a local bar. You could even have a small dinner or cocktail party at your home or the home of your soon to be spouse.

Should I expect gifts?

Unless your invitations announce your engagement before the party this event is really a surprise for your friends and family. As your guests will not know what the get together is for they can not be expected to bring a gift. This should not be confused with engagement gifts which are usually mailed anytime after the announcement up to the wedding.
